Character FAQs

Do I have to know anything about the movie Labyrinth? No. It is absolutely not required. If you've never seen the movie, that's just fine. More of this will be a surprise to you. The emphasis in this game is on the panfandom aspect. The Labyrinth is just a convienant place to set the game.

Do I have to have played in [info]mirage_rpg to play in this game? No, absolutely not. Some people are coming from that game, but that in no way means that you have to have even heard of Mirage.

What kind of characters can play in Labyrinth? Canon characters from various fandoms. We do not accept original characters at this time. There are enough fandoms out there to find a character to play.

Are any characters or fandoms banned? Yes. Please check the taken/held list for more details. Also, see the rules for character limits from fandoms.

How many characters can I have? You may start with one. After 1 week, you may apply for another. A week after that you may apply for another, for a total of 8. However, anything over five characters require that you be active with all of your other characters or any new character applications will not be accepted, so keep that in mind.

How many characters from one particular fandom can I have? One. This makes it so that one person does not monopolize a fandom.

What if I have one character but want to pick up another character in a different show but set in the same universe? This will not be allowed. Once again, this is to keep one fandom from overrunning the game.

Can my character be dead in canon? Yes. As long as your character was alive in that fandom at some point you can play them.

Does it matter which version of a character I play? No. There are multiple versions of say, Batman, so you can choose whichever version you would like to play.

Can there be more than one version of a character in the game? No. However, if that character is dropped, you can then pick up the character and play whatever version you would like.

Can I bring them in from any point in canon? Yes. Bring them in before they turned evil or after. At the beginning of their story, in the middle or near the end. Whatever you like.

I'm going to play a character from a cartoon/anime/manga/webcomic. Will they appear 2D in the game? No, everyone will appear in 3D regardless of the fandom's genre.

I'm going to play a character from a black and white movie. Will they appear black and white in the game or in color? They will appear in color, like everyone else.

The Underground FAQs

Where is this place? Somewhere between dimensions, trapped in a pocket formed when Jareth tried to escape Mirage. In some rough sense, it is between Jareth's old dimension and the one occupied by Mirage. It is hard to define other than that.

How did it come to be? The energy created when Jareth tried to break free of Mirage's powerful force field created a sort of halfway place.

Can characters leave if they want? No. Jareth doesn't want to let his toys get away, and it is impossible to get out of the dimension, unless you can convince Jareth to let you go. Your character is there to stay.

My character needs special things to survive. What about that? Anything your character needs, Jareth will provide.

Can my character just wander around? Yes and no. In the starting city, there is no problem. However, in the Labyrinth, certain practical considerations apply. And your character isn't allowed in either Jareth's Castle of the Goblin City until they have won through the Labyrinth.

Where will my character live? In the beginning, your character will be living in assigned quarters in the Illusion City, at the entrance to the Labyrinth. However, if they solve the Labyrinth or impress Jareth in some other way, he will let them live in the Goblin city, or perhaps even in his own palace. An important note about the Illusion City. It will not be known to your characters as such, as that would give a powerful hint that it was mostly made of, well, illusion. So while you as a player may call it that, your character may not. It's not information that would be known to them.

Who's running this crazy place? The King of the Goblins, Jareth. He created this place, more or less, and he retains control over it. Mostly. He is a powerful illusionist, and much of what is in the Labyrinth is illusion.

Are there rules my characters have to follow? Yes. Please see the RULES section in the mod journal for more information.

How does day advancement work? It is mod controlled. After a period of real time, a day will change in game. Sometimes the time between day changes will be longer or shorter, depending on thread completion.

What will happen when my character arrives? Your character will arrive somewhere in or around the Illusion City. Either a previous arrival, or Jareth himself, will meet them and help them realize where they are and that they aren't going to be able to leave. They will then tell them about the place and/or provide them with a tour. Your character's room key will already be provided at the front desk of your character's lodging. Your character will arrive with whatever they had about their person at the time of their departure from their own world or time.

If my character has any powers or abilities, what happens to them? They will still have their powers and be able to use them, with two exceptions. The Labyrinth will not be harmed. If it is, it will instantly repair itself. And those who have flight will not be able to simply fly over the Labyrinth, as there are invisible walls at a height of 10 feet. This barrier is unbreakable, and starts the moment you enter the Labyrinth.

Can my character die? If you want them to, yes. However, they will not be able to come back from the dead and no other version of them will be able to be played in the game again. Mod approval will be required for this.

What if they speak another language? If your character speaks a language other than English they will still speak their language but the other characters will understand them as if your character was speaking in their language, and vice versa. The same applies for writing.

What about pets? Your character may or may not bring their pets along. It is up to you. But they are allowed.

What happens if my character makes it through the Labyrinth? Your character will be greeted at the entrance to the Goblin City by a cheering throng of Goblins, and perhaps even their King. Depending on how they did in getting through the Labyrinth, they will either be given a new house in the Goblin City, or invited to come live in Jareth's own palace. Either way, they will have access to the amenities in the Castle, which are superior to the ones in the Illusion City.

What happens if my character doesn't go through the Labyrinth? They live in the Illusion City, and won't be able to visit the Palace. Exceptions will be granted to this last rule, if Jareth wants to throw a party or ball and everyone is to attend.

Could characters from different fandoms know each other? Yes! This is encouraged, within limits. For example, it would not make sense for Legolas (Lord of the Rings) to know of Willow (Buffy), he has no reason to have heard of her. But she, having likely read the Lord of the Rings books and/or seen the movie, will certainly have heard of him. Keep some degree of realism in mind. There is only one exception to the rule. No character may have any previous knowledge of Labyrinth.

Game FAQs

How do personal journals work? Think of this in terms of real life as if you, personally, were going to have your own journal. You make observations, vent, talk about what has been happening to you. You either mark it friends only, or public, or private to one or more persons. Those people can then respond to your entry through their own personal journals. It's the same way for your character. Your character will make entries that are either private to themselves, private to a select person or persons, friends only, or public. Then, other characters in the game would be able to respond. For example: Batman decides he's had a horrible time in the labyrinth and wants to vent about it. He makes a public entry that anyone surfing the journal site would be able to see. Buffy the Vampire Slayer sees his entry and comments on it, telling him to get over it. It could also be used as an Instant Messaging service, or text message service in the same way. Just make sure it is clear who the message is for.

What time period does this take place in? It's unknown. Jareth has taken people from all time periods and worlds and thrown them together. Some people may be from the future, while others might be from the prehistoric era. Some people may come from different worlds all together.

How will I know what day it is, what the weather is and stuff like that? The mods will make posts every few days announcing the day change. During the day change they will also announce the weather, any strange circumstances, new arrivals and any changes to the Labyrinth.

Is AIM threading allowed? No, not at this time.

How should community posts be formatted?

Use this quick copy and paste:

When and how often can I post? You may post as often as you like. Just try to make sure that your posts don't overlap so there isn't contradictory things happening in your thread. Because if your character gets knocked out in the morning, they may not be bright and cheery or even conscious in the afternoon.

Where do I send my application? Send applications to: labyrinth.rpg[at]gmail[dot]com

How long will it take to process? Hopefully not more than a day or two. You should have feedback by that time.

When can I start posting? New characters can post their arrival threads after the next day change which happens every Friday, or at the mods discretion. If it isn't on Friday, it will be posted in the OOC journal when day change will take place.

Do I have to introduce myself once accepted? You don't HAVE to, but it would be nice. That way everyone can greet you and tell you about themselves and their characters.

Should I greet new players? Absolutely. Introduce yourself and the characters you play. It isn't cool to be ignored, as a new player especially.

Where do I plot new storylines? In the OOC community, [info]labyrinth_ooc
. Put up a thread asking for storylines and plots and get to know each other. Please remember to respond to these posts that others make, to keep the game active.

General FAQs

Can I hold a PB? Yes.

What if the PB for my character is the same as someone else's? Then you need to find another person to represent your character.

How long are character/PB holds? For members of this game, the hold will be three weeks. For new players, it will be one week. One extension will be granted, as long as no one else has expressed interest in the character.

Can I challenge a hold? Yes, if it has been more than a week.

What kinds of PBs are allowed? We would prefer PBs of real people, celebrities, models, musicians, etc. However, we also understand that sometimes that just isn't possible. You may use artwork for manga, anime, cartoon, or webcomic characters. However, myspace people, friends, family, etc. are not allowed to be used as PBs.

My character is from a cartoon/anime/manga/webcomic. Can I use a real life PB for them? Absolutely, and it's encouraged.

Do I have to use a PB of the person who played them in the movie/tv show? No, you can use anyone you like as long as they have a similar look.

What are NPC characters? Non Playable Characters. Meaning that they are not a constantly manned character. They may only be needed for one or two storylines and don't need to be in the game all the time.

How do pregnancies, divorces, weddings, etc. work in this game? These work the same as they would in the real world. They take time. If you are going to have your character concieve, then you should be willing to play it out for the entire length of time. This is 9 months for most people. And we don't play in real time, so this could technically take over a year or two. These things all require mod approval.

What do all those acronyms stand for?
OOC- Out of Character
IC- In Character
NPC- Non Playable Character
PB- Played By
SL- Storyline
RPG- Role Playing Game
RP- Role Play
OC- Original Character
OTA- Open To All

What is a mod? Who are they? The mods are the people who run the community and the game. Usually the creators and maintainers. Jen is currently the only mod for this game, though likely more will be needed as the game expands.

What is god-modding? This is when your character controls another character's actions without their permission. It isn't cool, don't do it.

Do I need an AIM account? It is not necessary, but it is helpful for someone who might want to plot with you.
